Winter Soup - February 21, 2016

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday, February 21, 2016 at the Slought Gallery in West Philly!

We had over 80 educators, education supporters and friends who came together to enjoy brunch and soup and learn about innovative classroom ideas in need of funding.

Your ticket sales and a matching grant from PhilSoup raised over $1,500 in support of Philadelphia education.  We heard from three great presenters - Alessandra from John B. Stetson Charter School presented "A Garden Grows in Kensington" seeking funding to keep their community garden free of litter and create a cookbook featuring produce from their garden; Rachel from Southwark Elementary School presented "Responsive Classroom Trainings" seeking funding to attend a full-day training workshop regarding responsive training; and Christina from Cristo Rey presented "Shakespeare in Residence" to fund an artist in residence theater program from 9th graders.

After voting for our favorite projects, each of the presenters walked away winners with money to fund their ideas, but Christina was the big winner!

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to Metropolitan Bakery, Di Bruno Brothers, Honey's Sit 'N Eat, Federal Donuts and Panera for the food, the team from Slought Gallery for the amazing space, our fabulous photographer, Amy Leigh, and all of your for a fantastic soup event!

West Philly Happy Hour and Grades & Grants events

This January, PhilaSoup hosted two great events in the West Philly neighborhood.

West Philly Happy Hour

On January 24, 2016, we held a teacher happy hour at City Tap House in University City.  Teachers got a free drink ticket and enjoyed snacks and mingling.  We also asked teachers to answer the question, "What would you do with $200 for your classroom?" Some responses included purchasing materials to sew pouches for classroom library books, a Polaroid cube camera to film projects, and science lab equipment! Thank you to everyone who made it out and to City Tap House for hosting! Look for our happy hour in the Germantown/Mt. Airy neighborhood in the Spring!

Grades & Grants

Winter storm Jonas got us down, but not out! Our grade-in/grant-writing workshop, "Grades & Grants" was originally scheduled for January 24, 2016, but Mother Nature had other plans!

With Philadelphia covered in snow, we had to reschedule the event for Jan. 31, 2016 at Green Line Cafe on 45th and Locust Streets in West Philly.

Representatives from PledgeCents, a crowdfunding platform for educators, and the Milken-Penn GSE Education Business Plan Competition were in attendance. Both shared with our attendees how their projects and organizations can help educators reach their funding goals.

We also led a grant writing workshop, where we reviewed the questions of PhilaSoup’s application and touched on key pieces of information that should be included in participants’ applications. Participants shared their projects with each other and brainstormed ways to approach the grant application, all while enjoying coffee on us!

Thanks to our speakers, our attendees and to Green Line Cafe.  We are always accepting applications for grants, so check out our web site at philasoup.org/proposals!

Save the Dates in 2016!
